How to get to Hemavan

The small mountain village of Hemavan is located in the far north of Västerbotten in Swedish Lapland, closer to Norway than the next big town. Even though it may seem far away from everything, Hemavan can quite easily be reached by public transport or your own vehicle. Below we’ll guide you through all the options how to get from Hemavan. 

Getting to Hemavan by plane

The fastest way to get to Hemavan is by plane from Stockholm Arlanda airport. PopulAir is a domestic airline that has flights between Stockholm Arlanda and Hemavan six days a week (not on Saturdays). Schedules are usually released between 3-6 months before the departure date. 

Flights to/from Hemavan may make stops on other airports before reaching Hemavan, such as Lycksele or Arvidsjaur, so always make sure to get off at the right stop! 

Good to know is that the planes are quite small and in the summer are often fully booked well in advance so if you’re considering coming to Hemavan by plane, make sure to book your tickets well ahead. 

Getting to Hemavan by bus

You can also easily reach Hemavan by bus. Länstrafiken Västerbotten has 2-3 daily departures from Umeå to Hemavan and the duration of the bus ride is about 5 hours. If you’re coming from the south, e.g. from Östersund, you can catch bus 45 from here to Storuman and change to the bus to Hemavan there. Usually, the connection runs smoothly and there’s limited waiting time. 

Tickets for the buses can be booked in the Länstrafiken Västerbotten app (tabussen.nu) or in the bus, with a debit or credit card. Cash payments are not accepted. 

Getting to Hemavan by car or camper

A question we’ve received a few times over the past couple of months, is how easily Hemavan can be reached by car or campervan. The answer is: more easily than you probably think!

Hemavan is located right on the E12, the road between Umeå and Mo i Rana in Norway. The E12 is fully paved and in good conditions, although you may find it quite curvy in some spots. Also make sure to always keep an eye out for reindeer and moose on the way, any time of the day and year. 

Note that the last option for groceries before arriving to the mountains is Storuman. Half way down the road between Storuman and Hemavan (about a two hour drive) you will find a gas station and small convenience store in Slussfors. Your next option for gas and groceries is Tärnaby, a town some 20 kilometers before Hemavan.
